What do you picture when you think of Shanghai? Small laneways with gray and red brick houses? Wood-framed arched windows? If that's what you think of, then you're picturing GoEast's new Shanghai Library Campus in the heart of the Former French Concession!
Lane 147 Yongfu Road, Building 63
GoEast is bringing its modern Chinese language lessons into a piece of living history in this 100+ year old shíkùmén 石库门 house. The first-floor rooms are dedicated classrooms for individual and small group lessons in survival, business, and HSK Chinese. The second floor is a lounge space and open office for students and teachers to relax, study, and chat outside of lessons. And when the weather is good, relax and enjoy our private roofdeck where we’ll have barbecues and brunches, overlooking the Ambassy Court swimming pool! There will also be weekly cultural events in the lounge ranging from cooking, calligraphy and game nights to academic and business lectures.
Originally, GoEast's Shanghai Library Campus was the home of a wealthy family in the early 1900s. Like many of the historic buildings in the Former French Concession, it was requisitioned by the government in the 1950s but not well maintained. Fortunately, in the 2000s, the current landlord took an interest in restoring the beautiful old building, keeping as much of the original fittings and materials as possible, such as the windows. When parts were deemed unusable, the landlord searched for authentic period replacements in neighboring Suzhou. He managed to find floor bricks and decorative door frames from the early 1900s.
Now, Chinese language learners can immerse themselves in not only the language and culture but the history of Shanghai as well. Although some modern additions such as high-speed Internet, projectors, and new furniture, make the campus more comfortable for learners, you can still step into the past as you walk down Lane 147 Yongfu Road to GoEast's campus. Catch a glimpse of laneway life in Shanghai from bicycles and scooters to laundry and produce being washed and dried outside. Practice your new language skills with the neighbors and review Chinese characters on the houses' doorframes. Take a moment to escape the pressure of modern Shanghai and enjoy discovering Chinese language and culture at GoEast classes and cultural events.
We look forward to helping you connect with China through language and culture at GoEast's new Shanghai Library Campus!
