Kathy Wants You to Try Corn Flavored Ice Cream
GoEast recommends places to eat and spend time in Shanghai by following our community of educators and students.
Kathy Meng (孟洋Mèng Yáng) is from Yantai in Shandong Province and has been teaching Chinese for four years and has been with GoEast since February. When she’s not teaching she loves to dance Bachata and Salsa, which she picked up when she lived in Granada.
Where are we?
We are in the mean streets! You can find corn flavored ice cream almost anywhere from grocery stores to Family Mart to Lawson’s to street vendors. Basically, anywhere with a freezer will have this kind of ice cream.
What Are We Eating?
We are eating a kind of ice cream, it’s corn flavored ice cream called yùmǐ xiāng 玉米香. The brand we tried is called Yīlì 伊利, it’s a very famous brand here, they produce a lot of milk and yogurt. This flavor is very popular with locals, I think any desserts that are salty and sweet do well. It also looks very special (the shape is quite weird) and a lot of people eat it as kids, so it tastes like our childhood!
What Else?
When I lived in Europe I never had this kind of ice cream, I could not find it anywhere. I think it is very unique to China and I really recommend people give it a taste! It’s the perfect summertime treat.
