HSK5 grammar

The most difficult HSK5 grammar points

If you’re reading this, probably we need to congratulate you on reaching HSK5 level! But it also means you may struggle with more Chinese grammar points in Mandarin learning, especially when you find most of them make no sense to you or cannot be directly translated.

The three most important grammar points from HSK5:

The structural particle 所(suǒ)

This particle doesn’t have intrinsic meaning, but is used to emphasize.

How to use the preposition word 于(Yú) in Chinese

This word is highly versatile, which is why it creates so many problems for foreign Mandarin language students.

About the 为…所… (Wéi…suǒ…) phrase construction

This construction (which uses the 所(suǒ) mentioned above) works as an emphasis.

About HSK5 grammar points

HSK5 is much more difficult than HSK4, both in reading and writing. In addition to being aware of the difficulty, you had better adjust your expectation and learning methods.

If you merely want to focus on daily talk, it is not necessary to know how to these Chinese grammar points clearly. But perhaps you need to pass the HSK exam, or you want to know why and how exactly Chinese people talk in that way. If you are really interested in the Chinese language and want to figure out every single word you are learning, it is highly recommended to develop a habit of fully understanding grammar, and looking words up in the dictionary. Maybe you’ve already had the habit of using a Chinese dictionary (Pleco?), but now you need to pay more attention to the meaning of individual words. Many words (not only grammar points) in HSK5 originate from ancient Chinese. As you can see, grammar points in HSK5 are much more formal, and more often used in written language.
